The Unix CD Bookshelf

The books are:

Unix Power Tools (2nd edition)
sed&awk (2nd edition)
Learning the Korn Shell
Learning vi (5th edition)
Learning the Unix Operating System (4th edition)
Unix in a Nutshell, System V Edition
You also get a hardcopy of the last of those.

There are advantages to having books on CD. You can cut and paste code into your source code, you can use textual searches, and it is easy to carry around with you. In this case the text has been extensively hyperlinked and arranged to work with browser software (such as Netscape Communicator or Internet Explorer). On the other hand you cannot read the material in your bath :-).

Whether this CD is a good buy rather depends on your current state of expertise and where you intend to go.

Unix Power Tools is not a particularly good book (well its first edition wasn't) and three of the other books are aimed at newcomers. That leaves the main value for non-novices in just two titles. That does not make it such good value for money. I think prospective buyers should carefully examine what they want, unless at least three of the titles are on your list, you would probably be better off spending your money elsewhere.
