Although Windows 98 has been with us for sometime and will continue for a few years yet, this title was published in 1999 and therefore includes coverage of Windows 98 second edition. Like other titles in the Nutshell series it assumes the reader has a working knowledge of the subject as it concentrates on a detailed list of almost every command and feature in Windows 98.

Each topic includes useful tips and explanations, which are a great improvement on the built in help; in some cases it suggests alternative resources, many of which are freely available on the Internet. DOS commands are also covered, as they are still useful for many tasks. There is a very interesting chapter on 'Hidden Gems on the Windows 98 CD-ROM', this includes TweakUI, which is one of the most useful Win98 utilities.

Further chapters give an insight into web integration, the windows script host, the batch language, start-up and the registry. The appendices cover keyboard accelerators, filename extensions, system files and special/reserved characters.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to get the best out of Windows 98. It has already helped me to me resolve a few problems as well as discover many new features. I look forward to the Windows Millennium edition.
