Upgrading my various systems from Debian Bullseye to Bookworm appears to
have been a mistake, as I'm finding problem after problem.
The first issue was with perl's DBD::mysql which is unable to connect to
the MariaDB server using SSL, unless one tells DBD::mysql that SSL is
optional. If one asks the client to enforce SSL, then the DBD::mysql
library code refuses because it thinks that the version of mariadb's
mysql client libraries don't support enforced SSL when they do - because
MariaDB decided to "wind back" the version number.
The next problem which I have been noticing randomly is that on the laptop,
dialogue boxes will render as a black rectangle of the right size - with
the appropriate window decoration, but no contents. This happens not only
with various app dialogue boxes, but also the KDE "notifications" pop-up
off the task bar, and other menus. One has to find a way to get rid of
it and try again. Not very usable. Update: it seems that when upgrading,
one needs to re-configure the desktop theme which appears to prevent
this sporadic problem.
Next, Debian Bookworm switched to using the Pipewire audio server instead
of PulseAudio. This seems to have lost at least one bit of functionality
- the ability to set the volume of system sounds (e.g. terminal bell.) I
tend to set these to 70% of the overall system volume level, so the
terminal bell isn't too loud, but other audio (e.g. video / audio playback)
is at a reasonable volume. My current workaround had been to hit the
laptop's mute button and just not have any audio at all until...
Pipewire appears unable to stream audio through bluetooth properly to an
Anker SoundCore 2 - when using JuK to play music, the beginning of each
and every track is cut off, then I get about 0.5s of audio, then 0.5s of
silence, then the track continues. Not occasionally, but each and every
track. It was fine under PulseAudio, and switching back to PulseAudio
allows flawless playback, but loses me system sounds. There are times
when I do want system sounds, so this isn't ideal.
Another problem identified today - hitting Alt-Tab caused KWin to crash,
and despite being offered two notifications of this fact with options to
restart the "app" or "report bug" neither bug did anything apart from
dismiss the notification... and the only way to get stuff back was to
logout and back in again. However, on logging back in, I discover that
the Konsoles at the top of the screen now have their title bars off the
top, and thus are inaccessible with the mouse, making it hard to minimise
or move those. Luckily, one can move them via the task bar at the bottom
but that's not immediately obvious.
Given these issues, would I recommend upgrading to Debian Bookworm? If
you care about any of the above, I would suggest giving it a miss for the
time being.
