Peter Pilgrim: Architectural Implications of Java EE 5.0 [Slides]

This talk will give the audience insight into the Java EE 5.0 architectural framework. Peter Pilgrim will provide a very brief history and raison d'ĂȘtre for Enterprise Edition, and the business case for Java EE will be explained. From there the talk will delve into the core feature-set of the Java EE 5.0 specification and the reasons the Java Community Process decided to "re-invent" it. Peter will talk about the simplified programmatic interfaces for the enterprise developer.

This talk will expand on the Java EE 5.0 standard and cover the Spring Framework and Hibernate toolkits. It will explain the ideas of dependency injection and aspect oriented programming. We will talk about the Java EE 5 providers including BEA WebLogic, Sun Glassfish and IBM WebSphere.

If time allows Peter will discuss object relational mapping and briefly touch on tools that are available for Java EE applications as well as performance and scalability issues. If time still allows we might just briefly talk about front-end technologies such as Java Server Faces, Java FX and other rich internet applications.

'Less is more' is the mantra, so the speaker will attempt to squeeze this introduction into just one hour!

About the Speaker

Peter Pilgrim is a Sun Java Champion and a software developer and designer with over 15 years' commercial experience. Peter's expertise lies in Java enterprise development on the server-side. It also extends to web design, object oriented design and aspects of architecture. Peter has a Physical Sciences & Computing honours degree from South Bank University. He has been instrumental in software development projects for financial services, especially for investment banks like UBS, Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank.

Just before his first visit to JavaONE in 2004, Peter sent out an invitation on the then 'struts-users' mailing list, thus organising the first London Struts Meet-up in London at the infamous Waxy O'Connor's Irish pub in Soho, London. The success of the subsequent meet-ups eventually led to the formation of the JAVAWUG, a Java User Group dedicated to every enthusiast who is interested in all things Java web enterprise technology based.
